Surprise Flowers

Occasionally, we like to leave little surprises for random strangers.
One of our favorites are little paper flowers.
All you have to do is cut the petals out of scrap paper; layer a small, medium and large flower; and glue them together. Finish off the center with a button/brad/rhinestone, etc. and tape the flower to a pipe cleaner. Ta-Da! Instant happiness for a stranger.

We also like to attach a little tag that says something like, "Have a nice day," or "if you find this, it's for YOU!" Some of the best spots to abandon your flowers: grocery carts, at the library, parking lots (leave them under windshields). Or just take a bunch with you and leave them one by one as you go about your day. It's a fun, simple way to teach your kids the importance of kindness.

back to school: shoes!

I promised last week that I would clue you in on my favorites for kiddos shoes... for summer, it's crocs (hands down). But for the back to season school... converse for boys AND girls are my favorite!

Last night we had orientation at both of my kids' schools and the one thing the teachers always say is: no crocs, no flip flops and try for velcro (especially in preschool and kindergarten, where tying shoes is still difficult for kiddos). Since my kids live in flip flops and crocs in the summer... it's a huge adjustment to switch to real "shoes" for school. And velcro to boot!?!?

That's where Converse for kids come in... they offer velcro and slip on styles (both of which my kids have) and they are simple and cute!

Placemats for Picky Eaters

Are you lucky enough to have a picky eater at your house? One of my kids will eat anything I give her. The other one, well, I can pretty much count the number of healthy foods he'll eat on one hand. I'm sure you know the challenge this presents when mealtime rolls around.

A while back I devised a strategy to help Hudson become more engaged in mealtime, and more interested in what he was putting into his body. We spent time clipping pictures of healthy foods from magazines, we learned about the different food groups and what they do for our bodies. And I let him help me choose healthy foods at the grocery store.

We kept all of our food pictures in the kitchen, and at each meal, Hudson would get to choose what he ate. The only rule is that he had to choose something from each food group. It was definitely a lot planning and effort on my part, but it was fantastic to see him more interested in mealtimes, and more open to trying new things.

What really sealed the deal, though, was this placemat activity I made for him. I printed it, had it laminated and he uses a dry erase marker to check off his progress. After dinner, we simply wipe it off and we're ready for the next meal. Oh, and have you seen the new USDA's MyPlate? It recently took the place of the Food Pyramid. Anyway, I updated the old version of our placemat to reflect the new changes.

This definitely hasn't solved all of our picky-eating problems, but I do feel better knowing we're making a conscious effort. And it has taken a lot of the tears (and gagging) out of mealtime. :)

gear: back to school basics from Gap!

I don't get too frilly and fancy with back to school clothing for my kids... they usually need it each fall - well, clothes AND shoes, so I know I'll be buying it. But I have some tried and true methods that always work for us...

In my opinion Gap Kids has the best clothing for kids for a few reasons... their styles are always spot on to my tastes (this is personal, I know), their quality lasts and lastly the prices seem to match my budget... especially when you watch for their promotions and specials.

For my daughter I look for mainly simple long sleeved tops -I love that these have some fun personality - that will layer well with cardigans or hoodies. And then for bottoms... simply jeans or leggings.

For my son I take whatever I can get that's cute and not too illustrated or overly screen printed in long sleeved tops and then just some simple cargo pants or jeans. I love that Gap's clothes aren't OVERLY stylized... they are just kids after all and that the silhouettes are simple and easy enough for play. I try to avoid a lot of athletic clothing (as I do in my personal life) for school and save it for the gym or sports practices.

With Natalie starting Kindergarten I've been searching for the perfect way to organize and record all the memories she is going to be making. It's been a surprisingly difficult search as nothing has seemed to be just quite what I am looking for. Things may have changed, however, after discovering these on etsy last night:

Mother/Daughter Elementary Memory Book

What makes this version extra special is that it is a journal that you complete together with your child. It is divided by grade level, and each page has guided prompts for you and your child to fill out-one side for you and one side for your child. What a sweet way to not only document these special times in your child's life, but it also creates a wonderful opportunity to bond and open up conversations with your child. There is also a Mother/Son version available.

Our insecurities are likely the same as millions of other women around the world. Even though I have been a mom for almost seven years... sometimes I feel like it never gets easier. And maybe it just won't. But I do know it's worth it.

When I am running like crazy, when I feel like I haven't had a square meal in days (please tell me I'm not the only mom that this happens to) or especially when I've been out of town for a few days and off my schedule I always turn to a green smoothie to turn myself around and get back on track...

I keep the (very basic) ingredients on hand... here is what I use:

a liquid base of almond milk or orange juice (great way to add protein or vitamins quick!)
some type of green... in the summer I keep farm fresh kale in the house, in the winter simple baby spinach from the grocery store works just as well
frozen fruit... I am a frugal lady and when I over-buy fruit at the store or when it's on super sale I freeze the extras. Blueberries freeze great and for any other fruits I simply chop them up into bit size pieces and freeze them in bags in a single layer (so they don't stick together too much). In a pinch you can buy frozen fruit, but that I usually only have to do in the dead of winter. Old brown bananas work great too, run them under warm water to easily remove the skin when frozen.
fresh fruit... I find that a balance of fresh and frozen gives the perfect smoothie consistency... in a pinch, you could use one or the other. Or if you are feeling really adventurous... add fresh veggies!
yogurt... I prefer plain or greek, but in a pinch I will use flavored (or even one of the kids Go-Gurts! Gasp!).

I have to say that I don't really measure ANY of these ingredients... just throw them all in. In all likelihood I use about 1 part of each of these ingredients. If you are new to green smoothies... take it easy on the greens to get used to the taste. But now I don't even taste the greens. If you want to hide the greens from the kids use blueberries in your smoothie - their dark color will over power the green color.

And when I am feeling REALLY on top of my game I make two or three huge batches and freeze individual servings in either freezer safe Ball jars or Ziploc freezer bags. Then pull one out of the freezer at night and put it in the the fridge and your smoothie is ready for you in the morning!

Gone Fishing

We've been fishing lots of times over the last couple of summers, but we've never caught a fish. Not a single one. I thought it was high time to catch a fish or two. We picked up a little foam fish kit at the craft store to get us started. I made fishing poles out of dowels, string and magnets; and we attached paper clips to the fish so the magnets would pick them up.

Then we cleaned out our old, cracked wading pool and set those fishies a-swimming.

Oh, don't mind the wet patio, or the wet pants. Charlotte knows how to use the hose, and takes every chance she can get to water everything in sight. Herself included. She also took advantage of her chance to swim with the fishies before we tried to catch them.

This little activity turned out to be really fun for all of us. It's a great hand-eye coordination activity for the little ones. We also put a different number of polka dots on each fish's fin, so we can make it a little math game for Hudson. He has to add up the points he earns by counting the dots on each fish he catches. Plus, we decorated an extra-special-bonus-fish that's worth a million points. My advice: go for the bonus fish.

Time outside, a little learning, some laughing, and the best part: I don't have to touch a slimy, squirmy fish. A pretty perfect summer activity, if you ask me.

P.S. Bonus points if you can tell me what Hudson's favorite color is. Bet you'll never guess. ;)

yearly traditions!

This little tradition started last summer and now it's one of the highlights for the kids... they just LOVE it and talk about it all year!

TIE DYE t-shirts!!!

First thing in the morning we do the dying...

The adults usually do all the rubber-banding and then I supervised my son with the coloring this year and did the coloring for my daughter. It's a great project to do outside (and yes, I make my kids take their shirts off!).

Then you let them sit all day (or even over night) and then before bed we opened them all and rinsed them out (thus my kiddos in their pjs!).

The kids love their new tops!

We do them each year on our beach vacation... here are everyone's hanging out to dry for a bit! The best part is seeing how unique each style is!

Last year we used this kit: Jacquard Tie Dye Kit which I highly recommend. And this year we used a kit from Michael's but I didn't see the brand (we were too busy having fun!). And if you are looking for inspiration on styles and methods... we found that YouTube was full of videos and how-tos!

Homemade Bubbles

I've been a bit under the weather lately. Not fair in the summer! So the kids and I have stayed close to home, and we've spent our time doing some simple art and science projects. One of our favorites science projects is making bubbles.

All you need to do is mix a little dish soap with water and you're ready to go. Hudson loves to use his hands as bubble blowers. I have to admit, this method definitely makes some pretty impressive bubbles. You can also raid the recycle bin for bubble blowers: toilet paper tubes, twist-ties, plastic bottles (with the bottoms cut off) and paper plates (with a hole cut in the middle) make for some pretty fun bubbles.

thoughts on motherhood...

I'd like to start a column here on the blog that expresses my feelings on motherhood from time to time. My Favorite Things does it on Wednesdays and I think I am going to copy her... so you better read hers after mine.

Ever since I wrote the story that appeared in TORN: True Stories of Kids, Career & the Conflict of Modern Motherhood, I have yet to really put any pen to paper on motherhood (or little else, unless it involves blogging). But I wrote that story almost two years ago and life is decidedly different. My kids are getting SO big and my role as a motherhood is soon to have more sudden shifts than it has to date (minus when I decided to stay home full time with the kids).

So I'm not promising anything monumental here or anything too special. I just personally want to carve out time for some of my thoughts and hopefully some discussion as well. Discussion of "motherly" things with lovely and strong women that are in the thick of it right now like I am soothes my soul.

Any way... moving on... When I saw this picture on pinterest recently it brought little tears to my eyes... is this sweet or what!?!? It's a brother and a sister when they were younger... and now that they are older.

It made me take a minute to think about the relationship between my son and daughter. As their mom I want to think of good ways to foster an ongoing relationship between the two of them and also a sense of trust and reliance on one another as well. This will definitely have me thinking over the coming days.

In our culture there is an emphasis put on relationships between brothers (two or more boys) and sisters (two or more girls) but it's not very often when we explore the relationship between A brother and A sister. Do you have a boy and a girl? Do you encourage their relationship in unique ways?

Fingerprint Artwork

You all know how much I love a messy art project. This one's not terribly messy, but the kids will love it. Here's what you'll need:

ink pads; assorted colors
baby wipes
markers, pens, pencils
card stock
any little extras (wiggle eyes, etc.)
a table cloth you don't care about is recommended, as well.

Start off by making rows of finger prints on a piece of card stock. Use a baby wipe to clean off fingers between ink colors. After you're done making the finger prints, decorate them. Turn them into bugs, monsters, flowers, cars, trucks, people. Use your imagination!

When you get a few designs you really like, you can use the same techniques to decorate cards and bookmarks. Send some thumbprint critter cards to grandparents, or leave the bookmarks in the library as a special surprise to brighten someone's day.

Cinnamon Chips

When I was a kid, there was this Mexican place that had yummy tortilla strips that were sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. It was my favorite thing when we'd get an order for dessert. I'd long forgotten about these tasty little morsels. But recently, I discovered a recipe that brought back all those old memories.

The three ingredients are things I always have on hand:

Flour Tortillas
Butter
Cinnamon Sugar

All you do is melt the butter, brush it on a tortilla, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and cut it into strips or wedges (a pizza cutter comes in handy at this point). My kids love to help with spreading the butter and sprinkling the cinnamon sugar. Put the tortillas on a baking sheet, and bake at 350 for 10 minutes. Let them cool for another 10 minutes, and you're ready to get snacking!

So I probably won't win the World's Healthiest Mom Award for serving my children white flour topped with butter, sprinkled with sugar; but this is definitely a quick, easy "sometimes treat," that the kids love to help prepare. You do get bonus points, however, if you make fruit salsa to serve with the tortilla strips.

Here's a great recipe for fruit salsa. I kind of make up my own, though. I just dice up whatever fruit I have handy, sprinkle in a pinch of sugar, toss in a spoonful of my homemade strawberry jam and stir it up. Today's batch includes nectarines, strawberries, blueberries and a golden delicious apple.

I'd love to feature more "fun with dad" posts around here... if you are a mom like me you are always trying to schlep the kids off on dad for a bit! I'm very lucky that my husband is a super involved parenting partner... for that I am thankful. We all know that dads have a different kind of fun with kids than moms... or so it seems.

Recently my husband had a little backyard camp out with the kids. It was a fun primer to see if the kids would be ready for a full blown family camping experience (to which we learned that the answer to that is a resounding "NO") but give them a few years - and some practice like this and I'm sure we'll all be up for it some time in the future.

Regardless... it was a fun night and lots of memories were made. I was snug up in my bed though! :)

Keeping them Busy

I've had a hard time keeping up with my kids lately. Here's why:

Yep, I'm having another baby. I'm due in January, and I'm finally through my icky first trimester. I'm waving goodbye to the nausea and exhaustion that have been my constant companions, and I'm so thrilled to have my regular energy and attitude back.

I've had several doctor appointments where I've had to take my entire entourage along, so today I'm taking a little departure from my typical Busy Bees post to bring you a list of my favorite kid-friendly apps. I've loaded up my iPod and my iPhone with these babies to save my sanity during those desperate moments when we're all jammed into an exam room.

Tiny Wings: Love this one. This might be more for me than the kids. But my 5-year-old loves it, too.
Angry Birds: Need I say more?
Highlights Hidden Pictures: My son loves Highlights Magazine, and this helps take the fun on the go.
Toddler Teasers: Perfect for my nearly 2-year-old. It quizzes them on basics, like "touch the duck, touch the circle," etc.
Monkey Preschool Lunchbox: Darling game. All about shapes, colors, and matching. Love it.
BOB Books: Hudson is learning to read, and this is so much easier than hauling his whole BOB collection around with us.

If I'm going to let my kids play games, at least they can learn something while they're at it, right?

cupcake party!

As I recently mentioned... my daughter just turned four and this past weekend I planned a birthday party for her! Birthday parties can be expensive and labor intensive... however I did find here that I kept the cost down and the party super simple. Neither myself (nor my pocket book) were extremely wiped out when it was over... bonus!

The theme was cupcakes - it was simple and girly... just perfect!

We opted against helium balloons and instead filled the floor with regular old balloons... the girls had fun walking through them and playing with them and they were a fraction of the price (plus, a lot of hot air!).

Gorgeous poms from PomLove made for fun and whimsical decorations... plus, these got "recycled" as decor in my daughters room!

I got all the plates and goodie bag supplies at Target... they were SO cute and super inexpensive!

For activities we did a pinata (a pull-string version, which I highly recommend for little girls!), jewelry decorating (a kit I got from Target) and cupcake decorating... and cupcake eating!

Other fun things were the confetti from PomLove... I highly recommend! These I decorated the table with, put in the goody bags and even (surprise!) in the pinata! They are really pretty and the bag had a lot in it... so I had lots of left over for the future!

Jello cups I decorated to look like cupcakes... not exactly as cute as I had hoped. But the girls LOVED the whipped cream and cherries!

Busy Bees: How To Make a Fairy Garden

I'm taking a departure from my regular etsy finds today to bring you a fun and easy DIY I did with my girls last week: making a fairy garden! When I was a little girl I just loved playing fairies, and am happy to now have two little girls who do as well. They love to go on "magical fairy hunts" in the backyard, so I came up with the idea to create a fairy garden to help "attract" some.

Supplies:

A pot or two

This will be the base of the fairies' garden, so choose one that has a nice wide opening.

Cost: $0 because we already had these

A few mini size plants

We bought succulents and one pony pack of colorful flowers at Home Depot

Total cost: $15

Other fun misc supplies:

All of these came from Dollar Tree:

Mini Pinwheels

Reindeer Moss

Faux moss covered stones

Blue stones

A fairy statue

A set of fake flowers (so there is still color when the real ones die out)

Cost: $5

Mini house found at Goodwill

Cost: $2

These we already had on hand at home:

Glitter

Buttons

Rhinestones

Sand

Seashells
Driftwood

The steps:

I let the girls do most of this themselves, I just guided them when necessary and helped them plant the flowers.

First we found two pots that weren't being used (or-ahem-had dead plants in them), cleaned them up and added some fresh topsoil.
Next we planted the plants we had purchased around the pots. We didn't make a plan beforehand, we just went with whatever felt good at the moment ;)
Then we placed the blue stones in a path to form "rivers" and added sand near one for a beach.
We then filled in any leftover blank spots in the pots with the reindeer moss, faux moss covered stones and fake flowers.
Now comes the fun part: decorate what is left of the space with all the little extras you have. This is when we found a little spot to nestle the house in, placed the pinwheels and fairy statue, put some shells on the beach, and sprinkled everything with glitter, aka "fairy dust". Lastly we used a piece of driftwood to connect the two pots as a "slide" for the fairies

The Results:

The girls loved putting it together and have so much fun playing with their new fairy garden! Although Natalie (on left) was hesitant at first, saying "It's for the fairies! I don't want to mess it up!"

The roof of the little house we found at Goodwill lifts off, so Natalie put a few soft rose petals and leaves inside for a fairy bed.

All in all this was an inexpensive, easy and entertaining project for the girls. We made shopping stops at Home Depot, Dollar Tree and the Goodwill as I mentioned, but you could easily do this with items you already have at home or in your yard. You could also transition this to a fun activity for boys by making a "gnome garden" instead. Be creative and have fun!

And one last note, how cool are these lights?! I am thinking of buying some to put in the garden and calling the girls over to the window one evening to say "Look! Fairies!"

Summer can be brutal when you are expecting - I was pregnant during the summer for BOTH of my kids, so I know! Here are some simple essentials to keep you looking and feeling great!

A breezy & gorgeous dress...

Perfect for letting your belly breathe and for hiding swollen ankles and legs. This dress is just gorgeous and SO easy to wear on a summer day!

Bold statement earrings...

Throw on any 'ole outfit and a fabulous pair of earrings and you suddenly look and feel just as fabulous!

Colorful tops...

This top can be paired with leggings or jeans or trousers... either way you can dress it up or down and it flaunts your curves beautifully!

Pedicured toes...

This was always a given for me when I was pregnant... especially after I could no longer reach my feet, I insisted on regular pedicures. It's an easy way to pamper yourself and your feet could likely use some extra pampering!

Comfortable and cute flip flops...

For the better half of one of my pregnancies the only thing I could fit my feet in were flip flops. I love the comfort and slim style that Havianas offers. These are a must!

Counting Caterpillar

When Hudson was little, one of my brilliant friends (Hi Addi!) made a Counting Caterpillar for her son. Naturally, I had to make one for Hudson, as well. Now it's Charlotte's turn to have a caterpillar of her very own. While she might be a bit too young to learn her numbers, the early exposure can't hurt anything, right?

All you have to do is cut out some circles (I traced around a cereal bowl), add some numbers, feet and a face and you're done. Simple as can be. I'm thinking about adding some dots (like little dice) above the numbers so Hudson and I can practice addition.

Let me just put it out there: most toys for kids are just plain annoying. They are either made of cheap plastics, have a million tiny pieces, make lots of annoying noises or are all around "too much" (hello Bratz dolls). With that being said, I am obviously a sucker for quieter, simpler toys-not saying that we don't have a million of the aforementioned annoying ones at our house-but if I could do it all over again I would be much more mindful of my toy purchases. Road Trip Bingo

The kids and I returned last night from a wonderful week away visiting my parents. During the three hour ride to the airport, I remembered some of the fun travel games my mom used to have in the car for us. I used to love playing travel bingo; and I wish I had made this before our trip. But I'm sure it will come in handy for all those road trips in our future.

I designed this free printable for you to add to your summer survival kit. There are four versions, so everyone can have a different game board.

And in case you were wondering, the little blue vehicles are actual vehicles that the kids need to spot in addition to all the road signs.

All you have to do: print out enough copies for your kids, grab some pencils so they can cross off their findings (pencils work so much better than trying to balance a sheet full of bingo pieces on a bouncy car ride), and have a great trip!

Homemade Lemonade

You don't have to wait for life to give you lemons before you make lemonade. Go get some, and make an activity out of it. This is the perfect surprise to have handy when the "I'm bored" gets out of control this time of year.

If you're lucky enough to have a lemon tree (or know someone who has one) you can get tons of lemons for free. Also, check on craigslist or send an email to any mom's groups you may belong to. Most lemon tree owners are more than happy to part with a few of their lemons. Or simply pick some up next time you're at the store.

Older kids make great lemon squeezers, and younger ones are delighted to help with the sugar or the stirring. Simply mix sugar, lemon juice and water until it's just right. If you need specific quantities, you can email me for more information. But my kids and I enjoy just experimenting till it's just right.

A few fun variations:

add half sparkling water and half still water for sparkling lemonade
try different fruit purees (strawberry, blackberry, raspberry) for flavored lemonades
or make a simple syrup out of mint and sugar for a little minty-freshness to your beverage

We don't have anything major on ours, after all... we just got back from Seattle where we did all sorts of touristy adventures (think: zoo, market, hot dog stands, sidewalk chalk, ferry rides, airplane trip). But I do have a few things I wanted to do with the kids throughout the summer...

The kids each picked out new coloring books and supplies at Target last week... so that's a good start (and something that was on my list) I also picked up several coloring books at Menards (random) for only $1 - what a steal (!!!) - while I was picking up a Father's Day gift last week. So check that out too!

In addition here are some other fun activities I was thinking of:

- research roller skates for the kids.

- buy new paint supplies. And paint!

- book making.

- decorate cupcakes.

- join our local library's summer reading club.

- try u-picking our favorite fruits at local farms (strawberries and blueberries for sure!)

I am in the process of carving out a playspace for the girls in my office-it wasn't being used to it's full potential just being a space for me-and one of the areas I'm working on is a book nook. I love the idea of a cozy little spot lined with big fluffy pillows for lounging and a nice stash of books to peruse. I ran across these great book plates from the etsy shop Oiseaux, and think it will be the perfect little gift to present the girlies with, along with their new space!

Making Fossils

We love little "science projects" around here. This one is super quick and easy...and not messy, like my last project. All you need is some modeling clay and some things you gather on a nature hike or from the back yard. Grab some flowers, different varieties of leaves, rocks, pine cones...anything, really.

After you've gathered your specimens, you're ready to start the fossil-making process.
Simply work a piece of clay into a flat disc, place it on top of the item to be "fossilized" and press down. Peel the leaf (or flower, etc.) gently out of the clay and admire the designs left behind.

If you'd like your fossils to be more permanent, simply leave the clay out to dry for a day or two. (Crayola's Model Magic works really well for drying...it's not crumbly at all).

You all are the best - thank you so much for all of your advice on traveling with kiddos! I read it all!

If you don't read my other blog... I posted earlier this week what I would be packing in my carry-on... here it is:

1. I'll have my trusty MacBook on hand for movies... and because I never go far without it, duh!

2. & 3. My new iPhone (and likely my older version as well) with both come with us for games, games and more games! We are an Angry Birds loving family for sure!

4. My kids are just bonkers for Where's Waldo (this one is the Where's Waldo? The Ultimate Travel Collection). I'm going to be sure to pick up a few new (to us) ones from the library before we leave.

5. I absolutely always have to have a scarf on an airplane, you never know how cold it will be. This one looks summery and juuuuust perfect!

6. Have you seen Fantastic Mr. Fox? It's a family favorite and I'll be sure to have one on loan from Netflix for the trip!

7. & 9. Classic Gap hoodies (boys & girls) for the kids will be perfect light jackets for the kids to snuggle up in and the hoods will protect against rain if it happens to be raining when we land.

8. Target's brand 'Archer Farms' seems to be the best trailmix that I can find for the price around here (we don't have a Trader Joes near). So this will definitely be coming along for a snack!

10. My husband said, "what about me?" when I was writing this post. He loves to travel in his black Haviana flip flops. He has blue one's too... but I'm betting his picks his black ones (he's so predictable!).

11. I always like to make sure I have one small bag for necessities. Inside will likely be a stash of gum and lip gloss.

12. Speaking of lip gloss, this is my favorite. Plus it has lots of staying power. Perfect for flying!

I loved the last "what's cooking" - did you? I am obsessed with pinterest for meal planning and inspiration and in general I love to eat, so of course I love finding new recipes.

Same as last time these are recipes and meals that we are honest to goodness fixing and eating in this house... with real feedback from me and my husband and my kiddos. I always like mix a few of the long time favorites with new recipes - what about you?

So without further ado.... here's what's cooking in our house.

Baked Potato Bar... this is an oldy but goody in this house. Sometimes my kids eat it and sometimes they don't. Last week they didn't. But that means more leftovers for me. YUM!

Coconut Chicken... this was a brand new recipe for me. And in general I am too lazy for dredging chicken like this recipe calls for. But I waited to start dinner until my husband was home for some extra hands in the kitchen and let me tell you - the extra work was worth it. This recipe was SO good AND the kids ate it AND there were a few leftovers. Total yum. I highly recommend this!

Black Bottom Coconut Bars... I figured since I had coconut in the house I could make another family favorite. These bars are AMAZING! This time I made them in a cupcake tin and we all ate a few and I froze a few for later. They freeze well and thaw in about an hour on the counter. We usually make these for Christmas, but they are good any time of year.

Painted Butterflies

I have to admit...I didn't come up with this project on my own. My son did something similar at preschool; and I loved it so much I wanted to replicate it at home. You can show your kids how the patterns on butterfly wings are a mirror-image of one another with this easy art project.

Here's what you'll need: plain white paper, paints (any kind), pencil, eyedroppers or paint brushes, a butterfly template (I have one you can download if you don't want to draw your own), and a pair of scissors.

Fold the white paper in half, line the straight edge of the butterfly up on the folded line, trace around it and cut it out. Unfold and you've got a whole butterfly. (I've got more pictures of the step-by-step over on my blog today, if you want to stop in).

Now comes the fun part: let the kids paint any pattern on their butterflies. For the older kids, have them paint only half of the butterfly. I put the butterflies on paper plates to help contain the mess.

When they're done with the painting, fold the butterfly in half...making a painty, squishy sandwich. Unfold and see how the pattern "copied" over to the blank half. I should say that the paint we used probably wasn't ideal...it dried too quickly, so the pattern didn't look exactly the same on both sides. But you get the idea.

I think we're going to make a whole bunch more and hang them up like we do our paper snowflakes in the winter. I'll be back soon with more ways you can keep your kids busy now that school is drawing to a close. Until then, have fun!

I'm not so much a crafty person, I often wish I was... but alas, it just never works out quite right for me. But kids... they just love hands-on-crafty-craft stuff. No? Of course, that is why I have Christina on board keeping our busy bees busy!

Although I will admit that every once in a while I run across a project that I sure would like to try... especially with summer coming. I've got a lot of time to fill with my kiddos coming up!

Uggghhh... if you have had a baby recently, you know that the few months after the baby arrives you are on the one hand elated that you have a new bundle of joy... but you are also a little over tired and not usually the size you are hoping that you will be soon.

Keep in mind that no one expects you to instantly lose all the weight - be kind to yourself and carefully choose pieces that will make you comfortable and look the best you can! Keep it simple with two of my favorite maternity basics...

Leggings will help you ease back into "normal" clothes at your own pace. Maternity jeans with a demi-panel will offer support and extra stretch just where you need it. And of course, a couple of nursing friendly tops and fab diaper bag are musts!

I love to cook... well, truth be told, I love to eat more! My kids... not so much. They are so picky and while one will try almost anything... he's not so quick to actually integrate the "tried" item into his repretoire. And the other one won't try or eat hardly anything - some days I think she survives on fruit roll-ups and milk alone.

Here are some new recipes that I have found and made recently and whether my kiddos are eating them or not... ready, set, go!

Pineapple Cupcakes... my kids absolutely LOVED these... and so did my house guests a few weeks back. They are super easy to make and actually not too bad for you calorie-wise either!

If you have spring or summer family photos scheduled here are some fun ideas for outfits for the kiddos. You want to make sure to have coordinating outfits but absolute matching isn't really necessary. Be sure to stay away from strong patterns that will compete with one another, but go ahead and use color liberally! Keep in mind the kids comfort as well... you want their personalities to shine more than their outfits!

Squirt Gun Painting

We're always up for a good painting project at our house. The other day, while perusing the dollar spot at Target I scored a couple packages of squirt guns. Three for $1. How could I resist? Anyway, on the drive home I had an idea to use squirt guns for painting. There are a million different ways you can approach this project. So do whatever you're comfortable with, and make it your own.

I simply taped a piece of kraft wrapping paper up on our fence.

I thinned down some tempera paints with water, filled the squirt guns and we started making our masterpiece.

Here are a few helpful hints:

Wear old clothes.

Have some paper towels handy for cleanup.

Put the kids in shoes you can hose off (crocs, jelly sandals...etc.)

Rather than cement, do the painting over grass. Even if you spill, the paint will disappear the next time you mow the lawn.

Baby Sister couldn't figure out the squirt guns, so I turned her loose with an old race car. She dipped the wheels in paint and rolled it along the paper. She really loved participating in a 'big kid' art project.

The beauty of this project is you can just use stuff you have around the house. Butcher paper or cardboard boxes would make a great "canvas." Or if you want to make a game of it, make some targets out of paper plates and give points for hitting the target. If you're not thrilled about spraying paint, just use water and food coloring for more of a watercolor effect (and less mess).

1. Choose your battles: Being "in charge" all the time is exhausting. I don't like to fight. So I've chosen a few battles that are worth fighting: manners, sunscreen, and seatbelts, to name a few. So my five-year-old wants to dress in all blue because it "matches?" Sure, why not? It's not hurting anyone. Of course there are times I must fight this battle--church, weddings, etc. But as a general rule, letting the kids feel empowered helps build confidence.

2. Take time for you: You can't take care of everyone else if you don't take care of yourself. Everything in my life revolves around my kids. I'm rarely alone. The day that an uninterrupted shower occurs, I feel like I've won the lottery. On the odd occasion I can even locate my phone, it's usually covered in sticky fingerprints. Most of my "outings" involve playgrounds or train rides. So it's important that I have something that is just mine. Whether it's exercise, cooking, knitting, reading...hobbies = sanity. It's worth taking time to fit it in. And let's face it: the laundry will never be caught up--so stop worrying about it and take an hour or two doing something simply because you want to.

3. Read to your kids: My favorite time of day is story time. I love laying next to the kids, giggling with them, and reading story after story. We all know how important it is to read to our kids, so I won't get on my soapbox. But once I started treating story time as a priority and not just one more thing to do in the bedtime rush it became so enjoyable. I recently started a reward system with my five-year-old. He gets "points" for good behavior (helping his sister, cleaning his room, etc.) Each point translates to an extra bedtime story. He's being rewarded with education (and a delayed bedtime), and I get to focus on his good behavior rather than dwell on the negative. Everyone wins.

4. Don't compare yourself: I don't have a clue what I'm doing when it comes to parenting. But I'm a firm believer in trusting my intuition. I believe these exact children were given to me for a reason--because I am the very best person to be their mother. So I do everything I can to teach them in the ways that are the most effective for their individual personalities. It's taken me a lifetime to learn that there are countless ways of doing everything; and there is no one "right" way to do anything. Especially parenting.

5. Don't be afraid of a mess: Some of the best memories we make as a family come in the middle of a huge mess. I still remember making cookies with my sister and getting flour everywhere. I probably wouldn't remember that moment from my childhood were it not for the floury handprints we made on each other's faces. My attitude about messes: they can always be cleaned up. Sure, it might not be convenient. But finger painting, cooking, and puddle-splashing are some of the most fun times I'll ever have with my kids. So let go of the inhibitions and get messy!

1. Respect your kids. Like us, they need to be listened to, loved and adored. Like us, they don't enjoy being humiliated, patronised, embarrassed or ignored.

2. Shower your kids with affection. I kiss and cuddle my boys as much as I can because one day, there will come a time - sadly, when they won't adore me as they do now and it wont be as easy to grab them and shower my love onto them! They are precious wonderful creatures and every kiss and cuddle you give them helps them grow.

3. Love your spouse. Making your relationship with your spouse a priority will help you be a better parent. Being a great role model in your marriage helps the kids know that they are meeting a unified set of parents and will also make them feel so so loved. Take time out as a couple to have dates, even if it is just dinner together once a week, lock that time in and sit down and chat - about things OTHER than your kids! If you're single, make sure you have a strong support of friends and family around you who have a positive impact on you and your kids.

4. Be consistent. Whether it be with discipline & rewards, rules and procedures, start as you mean to go on. If you tell your kids one thing, follow through with it. Don't make false threats or promises you can't keep. Parents aren't expected to be right all the time. It is good for kids to see that you’re not perfect either and it's so important to say: 'I'm sorry’.

5. Have FUN. There are plenty of tears, screams, frustrations and worries in parenthood, but we must not forget to have fun and laugh it out. Everyone's kids do the funniest things and we have to remember those moments and stop to enjoy them rather than rushing onto the next thing. Stop worrying about doing the right thing - you're already doing your best as a parent, chill out a bit, relax and smile. Have a good sense of humour. Parenting is meant to be fun!

re-run: mom says! {elizabeth of clarity chaos}

This week I am posting re-runs of 'mom says' posts from the past in honor of Mother's Day!

I am so exciting about today's "mom says"... Elizabeth is an old friend of mine. I have some amazing, silly, fun and wild memories of spending time with her during college and she is a really great mom. Like a really, really great mom. She mothers with a purpose and I think you will see that as you read through her tips. There are a few of these that really hit me hard and I am working to integrate them into my mothering style.

Jill and I met our freshman year in college and for our junior year, we lived in a house jam-packed full of girls. I am so grateful that we have reconnected over the past couple of years -- yay for facebook and blogging! Jill is my go-to source for fashion advice and I consult her blog regularly for ideas on how to style the items that currently reside in my closet. Today I’m honored to contribute a few thoughts on motherhood here on good tots!

1. Say yes as often as possible. Kids have very little that is actually up to them to decide. It may get old for us to hear “Mom can I…Can we…Will you…?” but you can bet it gets old for them to hear “No…not now…we’ll see…” day after day. It is far too easy to make ‘no’ the default response, and from my earliest days of parenting I have made it a goal to say yes as often as possible. My take is that if I can say yes to most requests and permissions (Is it really going to hurt anyone/thing if they launch matchbox cars down the stairs? Is there really any reason they can’t bring their light sabers along on our nature hike? Is there really anything wrong with letting a 3 year old spend the occasional day in his pajamas?), then the rare ‘no’ will be easier to swallow, and hopefully will lead to less resistance because they know I must have a real reason or I would have said yes.

2. Use humor to diffuse anger and tension. My kids are 7, 4, and 2. Between brotherly interactions or battles between parent and child, tempers can flare and wills are at odds. When I feel my frustration growing, my jaw clenching or my shoulders rising to my ears, it can be hard but it is oh-so-worth it to take a deep breath and crack a silly joke, make a funny face or do a little crazy dance. It catches the boys off-guard, and once someone starts laughing it’s almost impossible to stay mad. (My husband uses this trick on me sometimes, and I have to admit it always works.)

3. Let go of the illusion of control. “If you hold on to the handle, she said, it's easier to maintain the illusion of control. But it's more fun if you just let the wind carry you.” [from Story People] In other words: lighten up! Example: When my oldest son was about 8 months old, I made the mistake of reading an expert guidebook on sleep even though up until I read the dumb book I didn’t consider my son’s sleep problematic. I suddenly convinced myself I needed to get him on a nap routine, and I spent three days wasting hours of the beautiful afternoon trying some new process that wasn’t going to work for my son or my family. By trying to cram him into a mold I had read about in some book that I didn’t need to read, I was frustrating myself and setting both myself and my son up for failure. I remember agonizing to my mother about my self-created problem, and she told me, “Honey. Having kids is supposed to be fun. If you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong.” It was all I needed to hear. Our time with little kids is brief, and enjoying it is a priority. I have found that accepting that my kids are individual people with unique personalities, needs and desires, and that I cannot control how they respond to my ideas about *sleep (*in place of sleep, substitute any of the following: eating, potty training, clothing preferences, social tendencies, or reaction to grandmothers wanting kisses) has been freeing.

4. Set them up for success. A little forethought goes a long way, and I have learned to rely on my gut for this one. For example: I know getting dressed in the morning can be contentious. So I started dressing one son in his clean clothes for the next day before bed at night and letting him sleep in them. Mornings just got easier. As far as behavior goes, in the case of my boys, it is most certainly asking too much to bring them on errands when they haven’t had a chance to expend their physical energy first. It isn’t reasonable to assume they will tolerate more than two stops on an errand run before starting to whine, fight or wrestle. It isn’t practical to take them to a park near a lake and expect to get out of there without them getting drenched and sandy. It isn’t smart to haul them off for a hike or a long drive or a run of errands without snacks and water. I do my best to create a kid-friendly culture in which they can thrive. I try to make it easy for them to succeed by recognizing their needs and anticipating the potential scenarios that may play out. There are choices I can make that empower them to behave within the realm of acceptability for their environment. (And choosing the environments to which I introduce them is part of the equation.)

5. Carve out space to let their stories surface. I have three kids, and both my husband and I work outside the home. We are a busy family and there is always a lot of activity. But my personal tagline is ‘finding clarity in the chaos’ and I put that into practice. Creating small blocks of time for uninterrupted one-on-one conversation with my kids is essential. They don’t all get it every day, but over a week it balances itself out and we find the time and space. One of my favorite rituals is crawling into the top bunk with my seven year old, after his little brothers have gotten their snuggles, and letting go of my awareness of time or post-bedtime to-do lists. We lay there in the dark, and in that stillness, the stories from his day that have been churning and bouncing around inside float up to the surface where he can see them clearly. If I rushed him through or cut him off, I would be missing these little glimpses of his life. I’d be missing out on the view through his lens. I wouldn’t see the connections he’s making or the lessons he’s learning or the confusion he’s working through. Some of my most profound parenting experiences and teachable moments have happened during these bedtime conversations.

6. Take care of yourself – and ditch the guilt while you’re at it. (I’ll keep this one brief, since I went over my 5-item limit.) It took until my third kid to accept the value and necessity of taking care of myself in order to be happier, healthier, more centered, and more present with my family. For me it’s a regular yoga practice and time to write or do some other creative work. You know what recharges you. The time to do it won’t surface on it’s own – you have to choose how to prioritize your time. I vote that self-care ranks pretty high on the worth-the-time list. I hope you do, too.

When Jill asked me if I wanted to contribute to her new blog, writing a piece on my top five parenting tips, I was flattered and frightened at once. Did she think I HAD any advice to offer? I'm always the one looking for all the advice I can get. Granted, I'm dealing with an unusual situation, having 2.5 year old triplets, but still, I have spent many frustrated evenings frantically googling for things like, "toddler keeps taking off poopy diapers," or "how do I keep my kids from climbing out of their cribs," or "how do you get frigging BATHTUB PAINT out of carpet?!!!" So I was a wee bit skeptical that I could come up with five bits of advice. Still, I gave it a shot.

Top Five List:

1. Take a Deep Breath. Unclench. I CONSTANTLY have to remind myself of this as I’m saying No! Don’t touch that! Get out of there! No no no RAWR!!!! Seriously dude – pick your battles. I realize as a mother it is my job to keep my children safe and help guide them and teach them to become good people, but they are 2-year old TODDLERS, for the love of Charo. Ninety-nine percent of the time, they are going to do what they want to do, despite how much I yell, beg, plead or cry. It takes herculean effort on my part some days to step back and really REALLY consider what actions they’re taking, and if it is worth blowing a gasket over it or not. And you know what? It usually isn’t. I just have my way that I would typically do something, and I can assure you it doesn’t fall in line with what a 2-year old would typically do. Thank God The Hubs is waaaay more laid back than I am, because in the end we balance each other out.

2. Don’t Forget Date Night. And speaking of The Hubs – don’t forget to actually, you know, spend time with your significant other. This is how our typical weekly evening goes: The Hubs gets home at 7 or 7:30, we start the bedtime routine of diaper changes, sitting on the potty, brushing teeth and bed at 7:30, which takes until 8 or 8:15, we eat dinner on the couch in front of the TV, and I fall asleep in 3…2….1… by 9 p.m. Doesn’t leave much time for actual CONVERSATION, does it? We are trying to make an effort to go OUT at least one time a month, whether it is to get dinner and drinks, go to a movie, bowling, or target practice. Just kidding about that last one.

3. Do Something For You. Word on the streets is that there are some people (Mom, is that you?) who feel like mom’s who take time for themselves are selfish. I beg to differ. I realize as a mom of three toddlers my situation is somewhat exaggerated, but I would be willing to bet that moms of singletons feel the same stress, frustration and pressure that I do. If I did not have a weekly arse-kicking in my Boot Camp, Turbokick or Cardio Fusion classes, not only would I physically not be able to keep up with The Trio Of Terror, I would have had a mental meltdown long ago. Whether you are a fellow gym rat like me, a shopper (also like me), spend time gardening, cooking, or just having a cuppa joe and a great book at your local coffee shop, it is important to take time for yourself. Does it make you selfish? No. It makes you human.

4. Make Dinner. Let me get one thing straight – I DO feed The Trips every day, but in all honesty, through the week it’s something fast and probably not as nutritious for them as an actual home-cooked meal. On the weekends, though, it is nice to cook, sit down and yell at the kids to keep their bottoms in the seats – I mean ENJOY DINNER AS A FAMILY. Is it the easiest thing to eat with three toddlers? No. Is it relaxing? HELL to the nah, but I feel like ultimately we’ll get our groove down and it will become a more relaxing routine. Fingers crossed please please oh pleeeease let this be…..

5. Be Present In the Moment. I have realized as I’m writing this that these top five “Mom Says” nuggets are actually more like reminders to myself, and this one most of all. It ties in most closely to number one above, and I have to remember to relax and enjoy my time with the kiddos, because they aren’t going to be kiddos forever, and it will be all too soon that they will be annoying teenagers screaming at me to stop reading their diaries and slamming the door in my face. Being a mom really is the hardest, most thankless job ever, and as physically and emotionally exhausting as it is, I relish just hanging with them right now, rolling around on the floor, tickling them to hear their precious giggles, coloring (not to toot my own horn, but I am pretty much a Crayola artiste – TOOT TOOT), or playing at the park. As sad as it is that I have to remind myself to ENJOY my time, there are days when I actually DO have to remind myself that.

gear: snack attack!

My kids are absolutely ALWAYS snacking... in general I don't mind for a few reasons:

One of my kids doesn't eat great meals, for her - I would rather her eating something rather than nothing through out the day.
In general, little snacks throughout the day that are healthy seem like a good alternative for keeping blood sugar level (I have problems with low blood sugar, but I don't know if my kids do yet... likely it would be something difficult for them to realize or explain to me if they are suffering from symptoms).
I would rather my kids eating when they are hungry, rather when I tell them it's time to eat. Seems like a good habit as they grow up - listening to their bodies.

Real Simple featured these ingenious snack set-ups... perfect for healthy snacks that the kids can grab on their own. Plus there are OPTIONS - and I don't know a kid that doesn't love OPTIONS. This is definitely something I am going to set up in my kitchen. Especially with the busy summer coming!

1. everything is a phase: when I get frustrated with the little things with my kids (tantrums, crying for no reason, endlessly pushing chairs up against counters to dangerously climb through the house, picky eating habits... and the list goes on!) I just try to remember that all of these little challenges are just a phase. It's most important that my kids know that I love them - no matter what challenging (or sweet!) phase they are in.

2. focus on raising adults... not children: this is great advice that I heard my pastor at church speak on. When you think about it, it gives parenthood a whole new perspective. I also try to use teachable moments in this light as well... teaching my children that we do certain things and behave certain ways because they build valuable character traits for adulthood.

3. communicate your needs to your husband: there is a reason it takes two people to make a baby. You need support. I need support endlessly and while my husband has his own life pressures, we make sure to parent as a team. Often I see moms take on parenthood alone because their husbands are busy and they don't want to burden them. But this can lead to burn-out and frustration and your marriage should not suffer because of the challenges of parenthood.

4. create "me" time - no matter what: sometimes you just HAVE to be selfish. Trying to be a good mother without proper sleep, creative time, alone time or time with friends does no one any good. Take time before you realize it's too late. Ask your husband for help or trade help with a girlfriend, but whatever you do - make time for your own needs!

5. do not compare yourselves to other moms: Kids need love, not perfection. I love the advice "Parent within your personality". Some moms will be more protective than you, more involved that you, more enthusiastic than you, healthier than you and the list goes on. Use your own strengths and play upon them. But whatever the other moms are... it doesn't matter. You have unique strengths and qualities that your children will love and respect you for. Be who you are and you will be your best version of a mom.

Backyard Birdwatching

Birdwatching is a fun, inexpensive outdoor activity to do with your kids. Not to mention it's perfect for this time of year. Whether you spend a little time each day observing birds; or you make a full day trip out of it, it's something every member of the family can enjoy. We like to photograph the birds, then use the photographs and whatbird to help us identify them.

Here are a few things we've learned along the way:

If you install a bird feeder, give the birds about a week to find it. (we picked up an inexpensive one with a load of birdseed at Target...all for under twenty bucks).
Toddlers tend to scare away the birds. They get so excited and chase after them shrieking, "BIRD!" or at least this is true in my case. And when the bird gets scared and flies away, the older sibling gets annoyed.
Take plenty of snacks (this will help the aforementioned bird-scaring problem by providing a distraction to the younger one). Plus, who doesn't like snacks?
Take an extra camera, if you have one. My five-year-old wanted ultimate control, which ended up in a lot of blurry photos of leaves and dirt.
